Overview

Build the Systems That Power the Next Generation of Technology

At Veeco, our equipment enables the world’s most advanced semiconductors, photonics, MEMS, and compound devices. Veeco is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to play a critical role in designing precision motion control, sensing, and embedded electronic systems that make these breakthroughs possible.

In this hands‑on senior individual contributor role, you will own critical electrical subsystems—from architectural definition through validation and field deployment—on complex, high‑performance semiconductor manufacturing platforms. You will work at the intersection of control theory, embedded electronics, real‑time software, and industrial automation, collaborating closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams to solve challenging technical problems.

Why This Role Matters

  • Your work directly enables cutting‑edge technologies used across semiconductors, photonics, displays, and power electronics.
  • You’ll tackle problems where precision, physics, and reliability truly matter—not just in the lab, but in production environments worldwide.
  • You’ll have meaningful technical ownership and influence while remaining deeply hands‑on.
  • You’ll collaborate with some of the most talented engineers in the industry, learning from and contributing to a world‑class engineering culture.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives on deep technical ownership and delivering robust, high‑precision designs that perform reliably in demanding production environments.

Responsibilities

  • Create and refine high‑performance, multi‑axis motion control systems that deliver repeatable, nanometer‑scale positioning.
  • Integrate advanced sensing technologies—optical, capacitive, inductive, and laser‑based—into closed‑loop control architectures.
  • Model system behavior, perform tuning and stability analysis, and ensure robust operation across real‑world conditions.
  • Translate system‑level requirements into detailed electrical and control specifications for actuators, sensors, encoders, and electronics.
  • Evaluate technologies and suppliers with a balance of performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Develop real‑time control software using C, C++, Python, and IEC 61131‑3 Structured Text.
  • Implement motion, sequencing, and safety logic on PLC platforms, with strong emphasis on Beckhoff (TwinCAT, TwinSAFE).
  • Integrate and debug industrial communication networks such as EtherCAT and DeviceNet.
  • Design complex, multi‑layer PCBs featuring microcontrollers, compute modules, precision ADCs/DACs, and mixed‑signal circuitry.
  • Define board‑level architectures, power budgets, timing constraints, and signal‑integrity requirements.
  • Create detailed schematics including power delivery, clocking, analog front ends, and communication interfaces (UART, I²C, SPI, USB).
  • Specify PCB fabrication requirements such as stack‑ups, materials, impedance control, and controlled differential pairs.
  • Develop embedded firmware in C/C++ and support hardware bring‑up.
  • Design and execute verification and validation plans covering motion performance, calibration, thermal behavior, and reliability.
  • Lead hardware bring‑up and hands‑on debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and JTAG tools.
  • Troubleshoot challenging system‑level issues using data analysis, modeling, and real‑time diagnostics.
  • Participate in DFM/DFT reviews and collaborate with manufacturing partners to transition designs into production.
  • Document designs, test results, and revisions to ensure long‑term maintainability and product success.
  • Support field deployments and critical customer escalations when your expertise is needed most.

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of directly relevant experience, or MS with a minimum of 6 years of directly relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong hands‑on experience with motion control systems, including servo control, actuators, and encoders.
  • Strong background in embedded and board‑level electronic design, including mixed‑signal systems.
  • Demonstrated Proficiency in C/C++ and IEC 61131‑3 Structured Text for real‑time and industrial control.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently deliver complex electrical subsystems from concept through validation.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as projects require.
  • Extensive experience with Beckhoff PLCs, TwinCAT, TwinSAFE, and EtherCAT.
  • Background in semiconductor capital equipment, precision manufacturing, or advanced automation systems.
