OVERVIEW

Build the Next Generation of Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology

At Veeco, we design and build advanced process equipment that enables the production of semiconductors, compound semiconductors, power electronics, MEMS, advanced packaging, and emerging technologies that power today's connected world. Our innovative vacuum-based systems support highly complex thin-film deposition and material processing applications where precision, performance, and reliability are critical.

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Technician III (Equipment Technician) to support the development, integration, testing, and validation of next-generation semiconductor manufacturing platforms. This highly hands-on role is responsible for building, integrating, troubleshooting, testing, and qualifying complex vacuum processing systems throughout the product development lifecycle.

Working alongside Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Systems, Process, Manufacturing, and Quality Engineers, you will play an important role in transforming engineering concepts into robust, manufacturable, and customer-ready products. This position is ideal for a technically skilled professional who enjoys hands-on problem solving, supporting product development efforts, and working with cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

This role offers exposure to advanced vacuum process technologies, cross-functional collaboration, and hands-on involvement in bringing innovative tools from concept through customer release. It is well suited for technicians who thrive in dynamic development environments and enjoy applying their technical expertise across a wide range of equipment integration, troubleshooting, and test activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Integration & System Builds

  • Assemble, install, configure, and integrate advanced semiconductor equipment, including vacuum systems, motion-control systems, robotics, RF subsystems, gas delivery systems, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Support prototype, alpha, beta, and NPI builds through system integration, engineering validation, and product release activities.
  • Support assigned modules or subsystems through integration, troubleshooting, testing, and build readiness activities while providing technical feedback to engineering teams.

Troubleshooting & Technical Problem Solving

  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, vacuum, pneumatic, thermal, automation, and process-related issues using structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Recommend troubleshooting approaches and corrective actions to address system integration, performance, and reliability issues.
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, vacuum instrumentation, helium leak detectors, and other engineering test tools to identify and resolve technical issues.

Engineering Validation & Testing

  • Execute engineering test plans, design verification activities, subsystem qualification testing, and data collection efforts to support engineering evaluations and product development activities.
  • Support chamber qualification, equipment characterization, process development activities, and system performance evaluations.
  • Document test results, technical observations, and findings that support engineering decisions, design reviews, and product release readiness.

Product Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to investigate product and subsystem issues and support implementation of approved solutions.
  • Perform engineering changes, prototype upgrades, hardware retrofits, and subsystem modifications to support evolving product designs.
  • Provide technical feedback and recommendations to improve product performance, manufacturability, serviceability, and reliability.

Collaboration & Technical Support

  • Support engineering releases through accurate documentation, issue tracking, build feedback, and technical recommendations.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, failure investigations, and product development reviews.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced technicians during integration, troubleshooting, testing, and validation activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 2-4 years of hands-on experience supporting semiconductor, vacuum, electromechanical, automation, or similar complex industrial equipment.
  • Direct experience with vacuum-based semiconductor equipment and wafer or substrate processing tools.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical systems within a manufacturing, engineering, or service environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related technical discipline. An equivalent combination of technical education, military training, certifications, and experience may be considered.
  • Experience supporting engineering, manufacturing, NPI, product development, or process development activities within the semiconductor industry.
  • Experience working with vacuum systems, RF systems, robotics, automation platforms, motion-control systems, gas delivery systems, or related semiconductor equipment subsystems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Advanced working knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, subsystem integration, and complex electromechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of vacuum systems, RF power systems, gas delivery systems, mass flow controllers, temperature-control units, robotics, and motion-control platforms.
  • Proficiency using engineering and diagnostic equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, vacuum instrumentation, helium leak detectors, calibration equipment, and other test instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex system and subsystem issues and perform structured root cause analysis while recommending effective corrective actions.
  • Experience executing engineering tests, qualification activities, data collection, technical documentation, and issue tracking within a product development or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, BOMs, ECOs, and work instructions.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, and execute independently with limited supervision.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and service organizations.
  • Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and initiative in completing assigned work, supporting project schedules, and contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, or issue-tracking systems.
  • Ability to learn new tools, processes, technologies, and equipment through technical documentation, training, and hands-on experience.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours as needed to support product development, production activities, customer requirements, or critical project milestones.
