Overview
This position is responsible for ensuring the development, execution, and management of commodity strategies in support of business objectives for the commodities assigned. The person will need to apply skills in understanding business, technical and supply chain requirements, performing market research, and effectively working across business units, functions and with suppliers to create and execute commodity strategies that best leverage supplier capabilities and the company’s procurement spend and meet corporate objectives of quality, cost, delivery and customer service. This person is to have a broad understanding of supply management and the commodities assigned; looked to as the “go-to expert” for the company and participating in the strategic direction of the organization. The Senior Commodity manager will be participating and leading the strategic direction of the supply chain organization; striving to meet or exceed external and internal customer expectations and committing to continuous improvement. This person has the experience and has, through action, demonstrated the ability to consistently perform the essential functions of the Senior Commodity Manager role.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in and develops an understanding of and insight into the market for the commodities assigned; including industry trends, cost drivers, global pricing, lead-times, technology and manufacturing capability of company suppliers and suppliers in the market that best meet expectations and objectives.
- Create, execute, maintain, and continually improve upon commodity strategies for the commodities assigned; focused on current and future alignment of technology requirements, and achieving objectives in terms of total cost, lead-time, capacity, inventory management, risk mitigation, and over all supply chain effectiveness.
- Highly skilled in determining requirements, supplier rationalization, supplier and supply chain development, dual sourcing, risk management, and supplier financial assessment.
- Lead cross business unit and cross functional teams to create and execute commodity strategies, continuous improvement and supply projects; facilitating medium size groups effectively; designing and managing working sessions; involving and communicating to management as necessary.
- Strong verbal and written communication; effectively listening and consistently communicating expectations, requirements and issues with suppliers and stakeholders across functions and business units and within the supply chain organization. Capable of communicating with both middle and upper management with clarity.
- Anticipate, recognize, analyze and solve complex supply problems; communicating to and involving colleagues, management and stakeholders as necessary.
- Manage supplier relationships and performance to meet company expectations and objectives. Capable of managing the most complicated and difficult supplier relationships and performance issues.
- Negotiate best in class price, quality, delivery, payment and delivery terms, and customer service requirements that align with business objectives.
- Negotiate agreements and contracts to establish a framework for the working client / Supplier business model, facilitate the needs of the business relationship, manage supply risk and meet business objectives. Capable of negotiating and writing contracts as needed to purchase goods and services.
- Lead, coordinate and support on-site supplier visits, assessments, audits and continuous improvement opportunities to improve upon total cost and address issues with supplier performance.
- Support corporate goals as to quality, cost, customer service and inventory management. Capable of understanding, introducing and leading new thought / “best of” supply chain and sourcing practices into the group.
- Support and provide leadership in creating and executing on the vision client has for its' supply chain organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business; preferably Supply Chain or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in purchasing
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in supply chain / strategic sourcing - APICS or CPM Certification highly desired
Knowledge; Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills
- Strong Negotiations skills
- Complete knowledge of all aspects of Purchasing including but not limited to: Source selection, price / cost analysis, negotiation, purchase justification and documentation
- Must be highly detailed and able to work multiple tasks independently with little direct supervision in a fast-paced environment
- Understands Purchasing Law as it applies to the purchasing function
- Electro-mechanical experience is a plus
- Experience in the vacuum and semi-conductor market place is desired
- Experienced in working within a contract manufacturing model is preferred
- Technical competence (understanding prints/spec’s and manufacturing processes) is required
